Abstract:
State-of-the-art virtual environment (VE) systems offers unique flexibility for the design of experiments to study human behaviour and active perception. Conversely, consideration of perceptual human factors issues is key to a successful virtual environment. I will discuss work by our group and others that shows how human visually guided behaviour can be studied effectively with virtual reality (VR). I will also discuss important human factors issues, caveats and limitations in the use of current VR technology and the interpretation of VR experiments.
Biography:
Robert Allison is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at York University and the director of the Centre for Vision Research. He obtained his PhD specialising in stereoscopic vision in 1998 before doing post-doctoral research at York University and the University of Oxford. His research investigates how we can reconstruct and navigate the three-dimensional world around us based on the two-dimensional images on the retinas. His research enables effective technology for advanced virtual reality and augmented reality and for the design of stereoscopic displays. He is recipient of the Premier’s Research Excellence Award and a York Research Chair in recognition of this work.
